10 Unique Nursery Theme Ideas to Design the Perfect Space for Your Baby
The nursery is one of the rooms in your home that most parents think about throughout pregnancy. And when I photograph in-home maternity and newborn sessions, the nursery is often the most meaningful and beautiful backdrop.
Here are ten directions that are genuinely distinctive — and that photograph beautifully.
1. Modern Minimalist
Neutral walls (warm white or greige), simple furniture in natural wood, a few carefully chosen items. The point is restraint: no theme, just quality and warmth.
Why it works: timeless and grows with the child for years. Never needs refreshing.
2. Jungle / Botanical
Deep greens, rich tropical leaves, warm wood accents, animal motifs. A wallpaper feature wall (peel-and-stick is excellent for renters) anchors the room.
Why it works: lush, warm, and enduringly popular. Enormous variety in how minimal or maximalist you go.
3. Celestial / Moon and Stars
Deep navy, gold stars and moons, soft neutrals, celestial mobiles. The night-sky quality creates a cozy, magical room.
Why it works: gender-neutral, beautiful for evening nursing sessions, and the imagery works from newborn through toddler years.
4. Woodland / Forest
Soft greens and browns, woodland animals (foxes, deer, rabbits, owls), natural textures.
Why it works: cozy and consistently popular. Works in almost any house style.
5. Ocean / Nautical
Blues, whites, natural textures, soft water-inspired imagery. Lighter than the jungle direction.
Why it works: fresh and calm, especially beautiful in morning light.
6. Vintage / Antique
Aged textures, warm hues, vintage-style framing, antique-look furniture. A deliberate nostalgia.
Why it works: photographs beautifully, particularly for families with heirlooms to incorporate.
7. Boho / Macramé
Natural fibres, woven wall hangings, earthy neutrals, rattan accents, a macramé mobile.
Why it works: the textures are warm and interesting, and the aesthetic is flexible across multiple design styles.
8. Monochrome / Graphic
Black, white, and grey with graphic patterns, bold typography, and clean lines.
Why it works: unexpectedly warm in execution, and highly distinctive. A contrast to the pastel-heavy nursery aesthetic.
9. Heritage / Cultural Theme
A deliberate incorporation of cultural heritage through colour, pattern, art, and meaningful objects.
Why it works: profoundly personal. These nurseries tell a family's specific story — and photograph with extraordinary meaning.
10. Storybook / Literary
A favourite book, character, or literary world as the theme. Classic Winnie-the-Pooh, Beatrix Potter, Where the Wild Things Are.
Why it works: enduring quality of the source material means the room grows well, and the imagery tends to be warmly nostalgic rather than trendy.
A beautifully designed nursery is also a beautiful in-home newborn session backdrop. Ask about in-home sessions here.
