6 Tips for a Successful Outdoor Family Session in Calgary
Calgary is a genuinely beautiful city for outdoor photography — when you plan for it correctly. Here are the six things that make the biggest difference for outdoor family sessions here.
1. Plan for Golden Hour
In Calgary, golden hour arrives late in summer (8–9pm) and early in fall/spring (6–7pm). Schedule your session around it. Midday summer light in Calgary is harsh and high — everyone squints and shadows are unflattering. The evening light is a different category entirely.
2. Choose the Right Location for Your Vision
Fish Creek Provincial Park — for wooded warmth, natural paths, creek views, variety within a single location.
Nose Hill Park — for dramatic open-sky shots and the full Calgary skyline in the distance. Beautiful prairie light, best in late afternoon.
Edworthy Park — quieter, riverside, large trees. Great for an intimate, unhurried feel.
Confederation Park — variety within a small area: bridges, water, open lawns. Red maples in fall are extraordinary.
Prince's Island Park — downtown, riverside, slightly more urban-editorial feel.
3. Dress for the Weather, Not Just the Photos
Calgary weather is notoriously unpredictable — a beautiful September day can drop from 22°C to 8°C between afternoon and evening. For golden-hour sessions, light layers that can come off are smart. For spring sessions, an extra layer in the bag prevents a session-ending shiver.
4. Wear Neutral, Uncluttered Tones
Natural environments are already visually rich. Clothing that coordinates with the natural palette — warm creams, sages, terracottas, navy — works with the environment rather than against it. Busy patterns and neon colours compete with the background.
5. Account for Kids' Energy Levels at That Time of Day
If your session is at golden hour (late evening), your kids need to still have functional energy. An evening session with overtired children produces a very different (and harder) session than a morning outdoor alternative. Know your kids' rhythms.
6. Have a Rain Plan
Calgary rain is usually brief and localized. I monitor the forecast and will communicate any concerns in advance. Light overcast is actually beautiful for outdoor family photography — even, soft light with no harsh shadows. For actual rain, we'll reschedule or move to the studio.
