A Year of Milestones: How to Plan Your Family's Photography Calendar

A Year of Milestones: How to Plan Your Family's Photography Calendar

The most common regret I hear from parents isn't that they took too many photos. It's that they missed a specific window — the newborn stage, the sitter session, the first birthday — because the year happened faster than they expected.

Here's how to plan so that doesn't happen to you.

The Framework: Your First Five Years

Before birth:

  • Maternity session (28–32 weeks) — the chapter before the chapter

Year One:

  • Newborn session (Days 3–14) — the window that closes fastest
  • 100-day / 3-month session (optional but beautiful)
  • Sitter session (6–8 months) — the personality explosion
  • First birthday session (12 months) — cake smash, classic portraits, or both

Year Two and Beyond:

  • Annual family session — same season, same photographer, year after year
  • Major milestone sessions (school start, new sibling arrival, significant family occasions)
  • Seasonal mini sessions (holiday minis)

The Continuity Principle

The most meaningful family photography archives I've seen are the ones where the same photographer worked with the same family over years. Not because loyalty to one person matters more than quality, but because continuity creates a visual coherence that makes the passage of time visible in a beautiful way.

The same light. The same warmth. The same eyes seeing your family. The images stack into a story.

Planning Practically

Book ahead, not after. The newborn window is 21 days. The sitter window is 6–8 weeks wide before baby is crawling. The first birthday is one specific date. None of these wait for convenient scheduling.

My recommendation: book your tentative dates during pregnancy. Newborn date goes in during the maternity booking. Sitter and first birthday go in tentatively at whatever point you feel ready to plan. Having the dates in the calendar means they happen.

Budget across the year. Instead of treating each session as a separate decision (with its associated internal debate), think of your family photography as an annual investment: a set amount per year, allocated across the sessions you've planned. This removes the decision friction from each individual booking.

Use the seasons intentionally. In Calgary, fall outdoor sessions are extraordinary and should be planned well ahead. Winter sessions work beautifully in the studio. Spring sessions have a brief window of cherry blossom magic. Knowing this lets you choose your sessions to match the Calgary calendar.

Building Your Legacy Gallery

I'll say this as directly as I can: the families who plan their photography intentionally — who book ahead, who show up to their sessions, who year after year create new images alongside their growing children — end up with something that is genuinely irreplaceable.

Not just photographs. An archive. A visual autobiography of their family's first years.

Your children will look at these images when they're adults and understand something about where they came from. About how they were loved. About what their family looked like before they could remember.

That is what a year of milestones, captured intentionally, actually produces.

FAQ

What if I can only afford one session per year?
Prioritise the ones with the narrowest windows. Newborn first, first birthday second, annual family session third. The sitter session is the easiest to add when budget allows.

How do I keep the images organised across multiple sessions?
My client galleries are stored and accessible through my gallery system. I also recommend creating an annual backup to a private drive or cloud storage for every significant gallery you receive.
