Baby Milestones Month by Month: Your First Year Photography Guide
The first year of your baby's life is the fastest, most densely packed chapter of human development. In 12 months, your baby will go from a sleeping bundle who cannot hold their own head up to a walking, babbling, opinionated tiny person who has thoughts about what's on their plate.
Here's a month-by-month guide to what you'll notice — and when photography captures each stage best.
Month 1: The Newborn Window
What's happening: Deep sleep, feeding, reflexes. Baby is adjusting to the outside world. Every detail is extraordinary and temporary.
Photography priority: HIGHEST. This is the only time professional newborn photography is fully possible. Book during pregnancy for this window.
Month 2: The First Smile
What's happening: Around 6–8 weeks, the first genuine social smile appears — a response to your face, your voice. It's one of the most emotionally significant moments of early parenthood.
Photography: Candid lifestyle shots at home capture this beautifully. Harder to produce in a structured session because smiles are spontaneous, but possible.
Months 3–4: Holding the Head
What's happening: Head control improves dramatically. Baby can hold their head up during tummy time, track objects with their eyes, coo and respond.
Photography: A mini lifestyle session at this age captures the emerging personality before the big milestone sessions begin.
Month 5–6: The Sitter Milestone
What's happening: Baby begins to sit — first with support, then independently. This is one of the most photographically rewarding milestones.
Photography priority: HIGH. The sitter session (typically booked at 6–8 months) captures baby when they can sit independently but can't yet crawl away. The best combination of new ability and manageable location.
Month 7–8: Curiosity and Mobility
What's happening: Crawling begins. Baby is moving, exploring, putting everything in their mouth. Expressions become richer and more distinct.
Photography: Candid documentary shots at home. Personality is emerging clearly now.
Month 9–10: Cruising
What's happening: Baby pulls to stand, cruises along furniture, may start waving and clapping. Stranger anxiety is often active.
Photography: Capture the pulling-to-stand milestone. Great for lifestyle documentation.
Month 11–12: The First Birthday
What's happening: Many babies take their first steps around 12 months (range is 9–15 months). First words often appear. Baby becomes a toddler.
Photography priority: HIGH. The first birthday session — whether classic milestone portraits, a cake smash, or both — is the anchor event of year one.
FAQ
Should I book a session at every milestone?
You don't have to — but many families do a newborn session, a sitter session, and a first birthday as their "big three." Individual milestone mini-sessions fill in the gaps.
What's the most-missed milestone for photography?
The 6–8 month sitter session, in my experience. Many families mean to book it and then the window passes. Don't let it.
