DIY vs Professional Maternity Photos: An Honest Comparison

Feb 13 2025 | By: Fernanda Bautzer

Let me say something a maternity photographer maybe isn't "supposed" to say: you can take your own maternity photos, and some of them can turn out lovely. I tried a DIY tripod shoot once myself, so no judgment here at all. But there are real differences worth knowing before you decide. Here's my honest take on DIY vs professional.

Can you do your own maternity photos? Honestly — yes, kind of

With a phone, a tripod, good light, and a little patience, you can capture sweet, casual bump photos at home. For a relaxed keepsake, that might be exactly enough — and that's wonderful. The key word is intention: a little planning goes a long way.

5 tips if you're doing a DIY maternity shoot at home

If you're going the DIY route, here's how to get your best shot:

  • Shoot near a big window during soft morning or late-afternoon light — never harsh midday sun.
  • Use a tripod and a timer or remote so your images are sharp and you're not stretching to reach the phone.
  • Keep the background simple — a clean wall or tidy bedroom beats clutter every time.
  • Wear fitted clothing that shows the bump shape (or a flowing dress for movement).
  • Take way more frames than you think you need — candid in-betweens are often the keepers.

Where DIY usually falls short (no shade — I tried it too)

Even with great tips, a few things are genuinely hard to do yourself: flattering posing you can't see while you're in it, even professional lighting, and the polished editing that makes skin glow naturally. DIY also means you're rarely in the photo with your partner — someone's always behind the camera.

What you're really paying for with a professional session

A professional session gives you guided posing (so you never wonder what to do), controlled lighting, a full wardrobe so you don't shop, and hand-edited images you'll want to print. Mostly, you get to simply be in the moment — present with your partner instead of running back to a tripod.

The hybrid option: lifestyle in-home sessions

Love the cozy, real feeling of home but want professional quality? An in-home lifestyle session is the best of both — your space, my guidance and editing. It's a beautiful middle ground worth considering.

How to decide what's right for you & your budget

If you want a casual keepsake and love a creative project, DIY can be a fun start. If you want images you'll frame and treasure — and the freedom to actually be present — a professional session is worth it. Many moms even do both. FAQ

What phone settings work best?

Use portrait mode sparingly, lock focus on your bump, and keep the lens clean — light matters far more than any setting.

What's the best time of day at home?

Soft natural light about an hour after sunrise or before sunset is the most flattering.

Is it worth upgrading to a pro later?

Many moms start with phone snaps and still book a session for the images they'll keep forever — both can happily coexist.

Whichever route you choose, I'm cheering you on. If you'd like the professional touch, check my availability or message me on WhatsApp.
