Fall Family and Maternity Photos in Calgary: Why Autumn Is the Most Beautiful Season to Shoot
I've photographed families in every Calgary season for 15 years. And while every season has its magic, fall is the one that makes people stop scrolling.
Here's why — and how to plan your fall session.
The Light
In September and October, the sun is lower on the horizon. The same afternoon light that hits your kitchen window at a harsh 90-degree angle in July is now arriving at a gentle 30-degree angle — warm, directional, golden. Golden hour in fall arrives early enough to be accessible (5–7pm), and the quality of the light during that window is unlike anything available in other seasons.
This is the "glow" you see in fall family photos that doesn't look quite the same any other time of year.
The Colour
Calgary's fall colour peaks typically in the last week of September and first week of October, though it varies by year.
Fish Creek Provincial Park — the cottonwoods and aspens turn deep gold and orange. Walking the pathways at Bow Valley Ranch in early October is extraordinary. This is consistently my most photographed fall location.
Confederation Park — the red maples are among the most saturated fall colour in the city. The bridge and creek area with the red canopy is consistently stunning.
Edworthy Park — the Bow River valley, the large cottonwoods turning gold.
Nose Hill Park — the golden grasses and the full-sky views in late October.
The Temperature
Comfortable. Not hot (summer sessions can be sweaty, which shows in images and in everyone's mood). Not cold (November onwards requires serious commitment to outdoor photography). September and October offer the sweet spot: cool enough for layers and textures, warm enough to stay outside comfortably.

Families with young children — the comfortable temperature extends cooperation windows.
Expecting mamas — a 28–34 week fall maternity session at Fish Creek or Confederation Park produces images that are consistently among the most beautiful of any session I do.
Anyone who loves natural backdrops — fall makes the natural environment extraordinary.
When to Book
Book by late July. Not August. By the time August arrives, the most desirable September and October dates are typically committed. Many clients who want fall sessions contact me in August to find their preferred dates gone.
My recommendation: decide in June or July that you want a fall session and reach out immediately. The earlier you book, the more choice you have.

What if the leaves have already fallen by my date?
Calgary fall colour is weather-dependent and brief. I monitor it closely and will communicate if conditions are significantly different from expected. Bare-branch fall images have their own beauty, but if colour is important to you, booking earlier in October reduces risk.
Is fall more expensive than other seasons?
No — my pricing is consistent year-round. Fall simply requires more advance booking.
