Feeding, Timing and Comfort: The Full Logistics of a Newborn Photography Session
"How long will this take?" is one of the most practical questions I get, and it deserves an honest answer rather than the vague "oh, a few hours" response you sometimes hear.
Here's the full logistics picture.
Why Newborn Sessions Take Longer Than You'd Expect
A portrait session for an adult or older child operates on one timeline: the photographer's. You show up, you shoot, you leave.
A newborn session operates on two timelines simultaneously: the photographer's and the baby's. And the baby wins every time.
Feeding breaks are the main driver of session length. A newborn may need to feed once, twice, or even three times in a three-hour session. Each feed runs 20–40 minutes. This is completely normal and completely unrushed.
Settling time — getting baby back to the deep sleep state after a feed or a diaper change — can take another 15–30 minutes. This is where the white noise, warmth, and gentle movement do their work.
Setup transitions — moving from one prop arrangement to another, changing wraps, adjusting lighting — add time even when baby is fully cooperative.
The result: what might seem like "just a few photos" represents hours of quiet, patient work.
How Long Each Package Takes
| Package | Approximate Total Time |
|---|---|
| Newborn I — Wrapped | 1.5–2 hours |
| Newborn II — Traditional | 2–3 hours |
| Newborn III — Classic | 2.5–3 hours |
| Newborn IV — Full | 3–4 hours |
These are averages. A particularly sleepy, cooperative baby might move faster. A baby in a growth spurt who feeds every 45 minutes will take longer. Plan generously and release any attachment to the specific end time.
What Parents Do During the Session
You're there and you're present — but you don't need to be performing the whole time.
During the long posing setups when baby is settled and I'm working, it's completely fine to:
- Sit quietly and watch
- Check your phone
- Chat with me (I'm always happy to talk)
- Rest if you're tired (the studio has comfortable seating)
Your active participation happens during feeding, settling, and the family portrait section of the session. Everything else is yours to spend as you choose.
A Note on Temperature
The studio is kept warm — significantly warmer than you'd keep a regular room. Dress in layers you can remove. I keep water available and genuinely appreciate parents who remind me if they need a break too. You matter in this session, not just the baby.
When Things Go "Off Script"
Off script for a newborn session looks like: a baby who has a massive blowout mid-pose, a baby who decides 90 minutes in that they're hungry again, a baby who sleeps through the entire session without waking once (lucky you), or a baby who wakes up alert and curious and refuses to be settled.
All of these have happened many times. None of them have ever resulted in a gallery without beautiful images.
FAQ
Can I request a specific session end time?
You can tell me your time constraints and I'll do my best. For packages with a set session length, I'll prioritize the most important setups to ensure we hit them within your window.
What if I need to leave before the session is complete?
If you need to leave early, we'll prioritize the setups you care most about first. Life with a newborn is unpredictable — I always plan with flexibility.
Is there parking at the studio?
Yes — there is parking available at 231 Yorkville Road SW. I'll send the specifics when you confirm your session date.
Any logistics questions? Ask me on WhatsApp — I'm always happy to walk through the specifics.
