Holiday & Christmas Mini Sessions in Calgary: Why You Need to Book in September
Here's a fact that surprises most families every year: by the time they think about holiday photos in October, the best dates are already gone.
Calgary's holiday mini session season runs roughly from early November through mid-December — and for professional photographers who offer them, calendars typically fill in September and early October.
If you're reading this in September, act now. If you're reading this in November, call immediately.
What Is a Holiday Mini Session?
A holiday mini session is a shorter, more focused photography session — typically 20–30 minutes — designed specifically for holiday card photos and family portraits at the holiday season.
They're different from full family sessions in several ways:
- Shorter duration — designed for one setting and a focused range of images
- Pre-styled environment — I set the holiday backdrop so your family arrives and shoots, rather than spending session time on setup
- Faster turnaround — quick editing for holiday card use
They're ideal for families who don't need a full annual session but do want polished holiday images.
What Calgary Holiday Mini Sessions Look Like
My holiday mini sessions are held in my studio on Yorkville Road SW, styled for the season: warm and elegant, not kitschy. Think soft whites, natural greens, warm lighting — the kind of images that look timeless on a card rather than "very 2027."
What you'll get:
- A clean, styled holiday portrait setup
- Full family portraits (all ages welcome)
- 8–12 edited final images depending on the mini package
- Fast turnaround for card printing
What to Wear
Warm, coordinated, seasonally appropriate. This doesn't mean everyone in red and green — the most beautiful holiday images use a palette of warm neutrals (cream, ivory, camel), forest greens, and deep burgundy. Cozy textures (cashmere, knit) photograph well.
Kids can wear something slightly more festive if you'd like; parents keeping to classic neutrals creates a beautiful balance.
How to Book
Holiday mini sessions open for booking in late summer — typically August or September. The announcement goes to my existing clients and email list first, then opens publicly.

FAQ
Can I book a holiday mini session even if we've never worked together before?
Yes — mini sessions are open to new and returning clients.
Do holiday mini sessions include outdoor photos?
My holiday minis are primarily studio-based for weather reliability. A brief outdoor element can sometimes be added if conditions allow.
What's the latest I can book for December holiday cards?
Allow at least 3–4 weeks for editing and printing after your session. For cards that need to be mailed in early December, book by early November at the latest.
