How Long Does a Maternity Session Take? A Realistic Timeline
One of the most practical questions expecting mamas ask me — and one of the most important to get right — is: "How should I plan my day around this?"
The honest answer: it depends on your package, but here is a realistic, honest breakdown of how each type of session flows. No surprises, no vague "a few hours." Here's the full picture.
Package Timelines at a Glance
| Package | Session Length | What's Included |
|---|---|---|
| Maternity I — Studio Essential | 30–45 min | 1 look, solo mama |
| Maternity II — Classic | ~1 hour | 2 looks, optional partner/family |
| Maternity III — Premium | ~1.5 hours | 3 looks, family included, Sephora makeup |
| Maternity IV — Luxury | ~2 hours | Multiple looks + locations, family, fine-art backgrounds |
These are session times — time in front of the camera. Your full day involves a bit more.
The Full Day Timeline
For packages with Sephora makeup (III & IV):
- 90 minutes before session: Arrive at Sephora, CF Chinook Centre (Macleod Trail SW). Your makeup appointment runs approximately 60 minutes.
- 30 minutes before session: Travel from Sephora to my studio at 231 Yorkville Road SW. Touch up anything, settle in, have water.
- Session start: Meet with me for a brief wardrobe and planning walkthrough (10–15 min), then we begin shooting.
- After session: You're done. Total time from Sephora arrival to end of session: approximately 3–3.5 hours for Premium, 4 hours for Luxury.
For packages without Sephora makeup (I & II, or if you're doing your own):
- 45 minutes before session: Arrive at my studio, hair and makeup already done at home. We do a brief consultation and get settled.
- Session start: We move into the session after the walkthrough.
- Total door-to-door time: approximately 1.5–2.5 hours depending on your package.
What Happens During the Session Itself
Every session starts with a brief conversation — wardrobe selection, confirming which looks we're going for, answering any last questions. Then we move into the actual photography.
Between looks, there's time to change, retouch, have water, rest for a few minutes. I don't rush. If you need to sit down, we sit down. If you need to use the bathroom, we pause. Pregnancy is physical, and I build that reality into every session.
If you're including a partner or older children, we generally do the solo mama portion first, then bring others in. This protects the gallery even if the family portion gets a little unpredictable.
Outdoor Sessions: Add Time for Travel and Movement
For outdoor sessions, add travel time to and from the location, plus slightly more time on location (we're moving between spots rather than changing backdrop at a single address). For outdoor sessions I typically add 30–45 minutes buffer over what a studio session requires.
When to Plan Around Energy Levels
Pregnancy fatigue is real. A few practical notes:
- Morning sessions (10am) work well for mamas who feel their best early in the day and for anyone who tends to have nausea in the afternoon.
- Afternoon sessions (starting around 2–3pm) work well for mamas who need time to get ready without rushing, and for outdoor sessions where golden-hour timing is key.
- Eat before you come. A light meal 1–2 hours before the session keeps your energy up and prevents the shakiness that comes with an empty stomach.
- Hydrate. Bring water. I have water in the studio, but having your own bottle means you're sipping throughout.
After the Session
You're done for the day. Within a week, you'll receive your proofing gallery — full, unedited images to select your favourites from. Final edited images are delivered within 30 business days of your selection, as high-resolution digital files in both colour and black and white.
FAQ
Can I extend my session if we're having a great time?
It depends on scheduling. I build a buffer between sessions, so there's often flexibility — especially for shorter packages. Just ask during the session and I'll let you know what's possible.
What if I arrive late?
Message me if you're running behind. We'll adjust where we can. For packages with Sephora makeup, timing is a bit tighter — leaving extra time for traffic on your makeup day is always wise.
Is there a place to rest at the studio?
Yes. There's seating throughout and we take breaks as needed. The studio is designed to be comfortable, not efficient-at-the-expense-of-you.
My older child will be joining. Does that affect the time?
It can add 15–30 minutes of "warm-up and wind-down" time, especially for toddlers. I factor this in when planning sessions with children.
