In-Home vs Studio Maternity Sessions: A Calgary Guide to Choosing What's Right for You
The most common response I get when I describe both options is: "Oh, I didn't know the in-home thing was actually possible." And then: "How do I choose?"
Let me break them down honestly — because both are genuinely beautiful options, and the right one depends almost entirely on what you want from your gallery and your experience.
Studio Sessions: What You Get
My studio at 231 Yorkville Road SW is a purpose-built photography environment — controlled natural light, professional lighting equipment, a full backdrop library, and my complete wardrobe collection (gowns, wraps, styled pieces).
The advantages:
- Control. Lighting, background, temperature, noise — all optimised for photographs. There are no weather variables, no neighbours walking through, no unpredictable elements.
- Variety. Multiple backdrops and setups within a single session means visual diversity in your gallery without moving locations.
- The wardrobe. My collection is here. You don't need to bring or own a single thing — we choose from what's available together.
- Convenience. You arrive at one location, everything is set up, you leave with your session done.
Who it's ideal for: mamas who want an elevated, editorial feel; anyone booking in winter when outdoor is impractical; anyone who wants access to my full wardrobe collection; mamas with limited mobility at 30+ weeks who don't want to navigate park terrain.
In-Home Sessions: What You Get
An in-home session is exactly what it sounds like: I bring the photography to you. Professional lighting, equipment, and (in a small kit) some wardrobe options arrive at your home. The space we use is yours — your bedroom, your nursery, your living room, wherever the light and meaning are.
The advantages:
- Intimacy and authenticity. There's a quality to in-home maternity images that's very difficult to replicate in a studio — the sense of this is where their life actually is. Your context is visible: the chair your partner built, the nursery you spent weekends preparing, the window where you drink coffee every morning.
- Relaxation. Most people are simply more relaxed at home. That ease comes through on camera.
- The lifestyle story. In-home images tell a story that extends beyond the baby bump — they show the life this child is arriving into.
Who it's ideal for: mamas who want a personal, intimate gallery; families with multiple children who don't want to transport everyone to a new location; mamas recovering from any pregnancy complications who need to stay close to home; anyone who loves the lifestyle photography aesthetic.
The Honest Tradeoffs
In-home sessions require a bit of preparation. The space doesn't need to be magazine-perfect — I'm not shooting an interior design spread — but I'll need some room to work and the key areas to be reasonably tidy. I'll give you a room-by-room prep guide after booking.
Lighting is less predictable at home. I bring professional lighting, but some homes have better natural light than others. I'll assess during our planning conversation.
The wardrobe is smaller. I travel with a curated selection rather than the full studio wardrobe.
In-home sessions have a travel fee — $108 for locations within Calgary, plus $0.60/km for distances over 40km round-trip from my studio in SW Calgary.
How to Decide
Choose studio if: you want the widest wardrobe selection, the most visual variety in your gallery, or the cleanest, most controlled images.
Choose in-home if: the intimacy of your personal space matters to you, you love the lifestyle aesthetic, or your home has a particular beauty or meaning you want documented.
Want both? You can combine them. Some of my packages include both studio and in-home elements, or we can discuss a custom plan.
FAQ
How far will you travel for an in-home session?
I cover all of Calgary and surrounding areas. The travel fee is $108 + $0.60/km for distances over 40km round-trip from my studio at 231 Yorkville Road SW.
My house is small. Can we still do an in-home session?
Often yes. Small spaces can produce beautifully intimate images — we focus on a window with good light, the bedroom, the nursery. I'll assess based on a walk-through conversation.
Can I do outdoor photos as part of an in-home session?
Yes — some in-home sessions include a short outdoor segment in the yard or a nearby location. We can plan this based on your property and local access.
Not sure which is right for you? Message me on WhatsApp and I'll ask you a few questions to help figure it out.
