So you've decided to do maternity photos — wonderful! Now comes the part that can feel overwhelming: there are a lot of photographers in Calgary, and they're not all the same. Here's how I'd choose, if I were in your shoes. (And yes, I'm a maternity photographer, but I promise this guide works no matter who you pick.)
Start with style: does their work feel like you?
Before anything else, look at full galleries — not just the single "greatest hits" on the homepage. Do the images feel light and airy, bold and colourful, dark and moody? There's no wrong answer, only what feels like you. My own style is simple, clean and artistic — I love elegant, timeless images that won't look dated in ten years. If that's your taste, we'll get along beautifully.
Experience matters more than you'd think
Posing a pregnant body well is a skill. It's knowing how to angle you so you feel flattered and comfortable, how to capture the bump without making the session feel like a workout. After photographing 700+ expecting moms, I can read in a second what will make someone feel confident in front of the camera. Experience is the difference between "I survived it" and "I loved every minute."
Questions to ask before you book
A few that'll tell you a lot:
- What's included — wardrobe, makeup, retouching, digital images?
- How many edited photos do I receive, and when?
- Do you guide posing, or do I need to know what to do?
- Can my partner, kids, or pets be part of the session?
- Studio, outdoor, or both?

This is where prices that look similar can actually be very different. Reading reviews & galleries the smart way
Look for reviews that mention how the experience felt, not just the photos. Did the photographer make nervous clients comfortable? Were galleries delivered on time? Local recognition can help too — being named among Calgary's top photographers is a nice signal, but the everyday reviews tell the real story.
Red flags to watch for
Be cautious if a photographer can't show you a full, consistent body of work, is vague about what's included or what things cost, or makes you feel rushed during your first conversation. Your comfort on shoot day starts with how you're treated before it.
