How to Pose for Maternity Photos When You Have Absolutely No Idea How

How to Pose for Maternity Photos When You Have Absolutely No Idea How

"I don't know how to pose." I hear this at least once a week, usually the day before a session, in a message that has a small amount of genuine anxiety behind it.

Here's what I want you to know right now: not knowing how to pose is the completely normal starting point. That's not a problem. That's just Tuesday.

After photographing over 700 pregnant mamas, I have never once had a client arrive who already knew exactly how to move, where to place her hands, or how to hold her chin. That knowledge is my job, not yours. And in 15 years, we have figured it out together every single time.

Why You Don't Need to Know How to Pose

When you walk into a professional maternity session, you're not expected to perform. You're expected to show up — as yourself, exactly as you are, at this particular week of pregnancy.

My role is to see what's beautiful about the way you hold yourself, understand the shapes that your body makes, and gently guide you into positions that feel natural while looking extraordinary on camera. There's a significant gap between "I look terrible in photos" and "I've never had someone show me how to move in front of a camera." Most people who believe the first thing are actually just experiencing the second.

The Poses That Work for Almost Everyone

These aren't rigid poses — they're starting positions that I'll adjust and personalise for your body and your story:

The side profile with hands cradling the belly. Simple, powerful, and timeless. In profile, the full shape of the bump is visible and the silhouette tells a story. I'll guide where your hands sit — slightly below the belly, slightly above, overlapping with your partner's hands.

Looking down toward the belly. A quiet, intimate moment — you're in conversation with your baby. The angle of the chin, the softness of the gaze, the slight smile that happens naturally — this produces some of the most tender images in any session.

The turn and look. You're walking, you stop, you look back over your shoulder. It's a movement, not a pose — and movement almost always produces more natural images than stillness.

Leaning against a surface. A wall, a tree, a door frame — having something to lean against removes the "what do I do with my body" anxiety and creates an organic, casual quality.

The connection poses with partners. Your partner's forehead against yours. His hands on the belly from behind. Her arms wrapped around you. These produce the images that make people cry (in the best way). I'll direct both of you, completely — all you need to do is be present with each other.

The Thing About "Natural" Posing

The most natural-looking images are usually the result of the most specific direction. When I say "soften your shoulders slightly, turn your chin just a touch this way, bring your hands here" — the cumulative result looks effortless. That's not an accident. It's years of knowing what the camera sees versus what the eye sees.

"Natural" is a destination, not a starting point. We get there together.

What About Feeling Self-Conscious?

I hear this too: "I've never liked photos of myself."

Pregnancy is one of the few times that changes. I don't fully understand why, but in 15 years of shooting, I've seen mamas who actively disliked photos of themselves transform in front of the camera once they're in a gown, in thoughtful light, with their bump as the centrepiece. There's an ownership and a strength in how pregnant women carry themselves when they feel supported that is genuinely beautiful to photograph.

Give yourself the chance to see it.

During the Session: What to Expect

I talk through every single thing I'm doing. "I'm going to move your hand here." "Can you turn slightly left?" "Look down toward your belly for a second — perfect." You'll never be left to figure something out alone.

We also move regularly — I never plant you in one spot and shoot for 20 minutes. We change the location, change the setup, change the light angle. That movement keeps things fresh and keeps your body from tensing up.

You're allowed to check images as we go, laugh at the awkward ones, and tell me if something feels uncomfortable. This is your session.

FAQ

What if I freeze in front of the camera?
It happens, and it's totally okay. We'll start with a few minutes of just talking — about your pregnancy, your due date, your baby name if you have one. Once you're comfortable, I'll start shooting. The first few frames are never my favourites anyway.

Can I look at reference images I like before the session?
Yes — please do. Send them to me. It gives me a sense of the vibe you're drawn to, whether that's more editorial and bold or softer and intimate.

What poses are most flattering for a pregnant belly?
Side angles and three-quarter turns generally photograph the belly most beautifully — the shape reads clearly and the curve has depth. Straight-on can also work but requires more intentional angle adjustment.

I'm short/tall/plus-size — does that affect posing?
No. Posing is entirely individual. I adjust every guide based on your actual body, not a template. I've photographed mamas of every size and shape over 15 years and the approach is always personalised.

The only thing you need to bring to your session is yourself. I'll handle the rest. Let's plan yours.
