Maternity Photos at Fish Creek Park: Why It's Been My Favourite Spot for 15 Years

Maternity Photos at Fish Creek Park: Why It's Been My Favourite Spot for 15 Years

If you've lived in Calgary long enough, you know Fish Creek. The trails in the early morning, the cottonwoods in fall, the creek that sounds like nothing else in the city. It's where Calgarians go when they need to breathe.

It's also where I've shot some of my most beautiful maternity sessions. And after 15 years of returning here with expecting mamas, I can tell you exactly why — and what makes the difference between a good session here and a great one.

What Makes Fish Creek Special for Maternity Photography

The park covers over 19 square kilometres, which sounds overwhelming, but what matters photographically is its variety within a relatively compact shooting radius.

The tree canopies. The cottonwoods and aspens along the creek pathways create an overhead canopy that filters light in a way that's genuinely magical. In late afternoon, the light breaks through in warm shafts. In overcast conditions, the canopy acts as a natural softbox — even, flattering, beautiful. This kind of light is exactly what you want for maternity portraits.

The Bow Valley Ranch area. This is my most recommended part of the park. The heritage farmhouse, the open field, the rustic wooden fences, the old apple trees — it has a timeless quality. Images taken here don't look like they were taken in any specific year. They look like they could hang in a frame forever. Accessibility is excellent, which matters when you're at 30 weeks.

The creek itself. Flowing water adds movement and sound to a session in a way that puts people at ease. Even when we're not directly by the water, knowing it's nearby changes the energy.

The diversity of backdrops. Within a 10–15 minute walk, we can move from dense wooded paths to open meadows to the heritage ranch setting. This means visual variety within a single session location — your gallery won't look repetitive.

The Best Season at Fish Creek

All four seasons work, but fall — late September to mid-October — is when Fish Creek becomes extraordinary. The cottonwood leaves turn a deep gold and orange, the light falls warm and low, and the park has a richness that's difficult to describe until you see the images.

Spring (May–June) brings lush green growth and the creek runs higher and louder — beautiful in its own way. Summer is lush and full, with excellent evening light. Winter brings a stripped-down beauty — bare branches, occasional snow, quiet paths.

Practical Details: What to Know Before You Go

Parking: Multiple access points with good parking. I'll specify the meeting point based on where we're shooting.

Footwear: Pathways are maintained, but natural. Flat sandals, simple shoes, or bare feet in summer are ideal. Avoid stilettos or anything that doesn't handle light gravel and grass.

Wildlife: You may encounter deer, particularly in early morning or evening. This is genuinely magical rather than concerning — I've had deer wander into a session, and those are some of the most beautiful images I've ever taken.

Time of day: Late afternoon and golden hour are my strong preference. The park faces west across open sky, which means the sunset light hits the canopy from a beautiful angle.

What a Fish Creek Session Looks Like

We typically start in the wooded path section — making use of the tree canopy light and the sense of privacy those spaces create. From there, we move into more open areas for wider, more sweeping compositions. If the light is right and the timing allows, we'll finish in the golden field of the Bow Valley Ranch area.

Breaks are always available. There are benches, open areas to sit, and I carry water. This is your session — we move at your pace.

FAQ

Is Fish Creek accessible for a pregnant mama at 30+ weeks?
Yes — I specifically choose accessible routes and avoid any significant elevation change for maternity sessions. The pathways I use are flat and well-maintained.

Can I bring my dog to a Fish Creek session?
Yes — Fish Creek allows leashed dogs and it can be a beautiful addition to your session. Let me know in advance so we can plan it well.

What if it's windy?
Calgary wind is real. A breeze is beautiful in photos — it creates movement in gowns and a natural quality. Strong wind is harder to work with; if it's forecast to be very gusty, I'll flag this beforehand.

Can I request Fish Creek as my location?
Absolutely. Just mention it when we're planning your session and we'll build it in.

Fish Creek is one of my heart locations. If you'd like to shoot there, let me know on WhatsApp and we'll make it happen.
