Keeping Baby Calm and Sleepy During a Newborn Session: Tips That Actually Work

Keeping Baby Calm and Sleepy During a Newborn Session: Tips That Actually Work

The golden state for newborn photography is a deeply sleeping, milk-full baby who is warm, comfortable, and content enough to be gently moved without waking. Achieving this is part skill, part timing, and partly just accepting that babies are wonderfully unpredictable.

Here's what actually helps — from both a parent-preparation perspective and what I do in the studio.

What You Can Do Before Arriving

Time the feed. This is the single biggest controllable variable. A full feed within 45–60 minutes of the session start sends most newborns into that beautiful milk-drunk drowsy state. Not too full (which means more spit-up), not hungry (which means fussy). The 45-minute window tends to hit right.

Keep baby awake in the car if possible. Counter-intuitive, but a baby who has just woken from a car nap is often more alert and harder to settle than one who hasn't yet been deeply asleep. If you can time the drive so baby isn't deep-sleeping just before you arrive, it can help.

Keep the pre-session environment calm. No loud visitors or chaotic environments immediately before the session. The calmer the hour before arrival, generally, the calmer the baby.

What I Do in the Studio

Temperature. The studio is kept at approximately 80–85°F (27–29°C) for sessions involving minimally dressed or undressed newborns. Warmth is one of the most reliable settling tools available — it mimics the environment babies spent nine months in.

White noise. I use a white noise machine throughout newborn sessions. The shushing, constant sound has a well-documented settling effect on newborns, mimicking the constant background noise of the womb.

Shushing and gentle movement. The "shush-pat" — continuous gentle patting on the back combined with a consistent shushing sound — is remarkably effective for settling a newborn who is slightly fussy. I do this myself and will show you if it's helpful.

Swaddling for settling, then carefully opening. For many poses, I'll swaddle baby firmly to settle them into a deep sleep, then gently unwrap for the actual setup once they're fully under.

Patience. The most important tool. I never rush. A baby who needs 20 minutes to settle fully gets 20 minutes. This is built into every session.

When Baby Just Won't Settle

Sometimes babies don't follow the plan. A growth spurt, an off day, a change in routine — there are days when a baby simply will not sleep the way the timing suggests they should.

This is not a failed session. In 15 years, I have never had a session that didn't produce beautiful images. Awake babies produce different images — more alert, more expressive, less posed and more candid. A session where baby doesn't settle fully into the deep-sleep state will have more lifestyle and awake portraits, and some of those are among the most beautiful in any gallery.

FAQ

What if my baby was awake all night and then slept all morning — will they sleep in the studio?
Maybe, maybe not. Fresh from sleeping is harder, but the warm environment and feed often help anyway. We work with wherever baby is.

Does swaddling affect the session?
No — swaddling is one of the tools I use to settle baby. Once settled, we unwrap for the actual poses.

Can I nurse during the session?
Absolutely and as many times as needed. Nursing breaks are completely normal and built into the session time.

Trust the process. In 15 years, it has always worked out. Book your session here.
