One of the most common questions I hear from mamas who are just starting to plan their session: "What should I wear?" And honestly, it's a great question — because what you choose helps set the tone for your whole gallery.
There isn't one perfect answer. But after photographing lots of maternity sessions, I've found that most outfit choices fall into three simple directions — and knowing the difference can help you choose something you'll truly love.
Look 1: The Flowing Gown
What it is: A long, floor-length gown that usually fits through the belly and then flows out into a soft skirt or train. Chiffon, lace, and stretchy fabrics work especially well because they move beautifully.
The vibe: Elegant, timeless, and a little dramatic in the best way. These are the kinds of images that feel polished and artistic, with lovely movement that photographs beautifully outdoors or in the studio.
When it works best: Studio sessions, golden hour outdoor sessions, and anyone who wants a classic look that feels elevated without being overdone. It also works beautifully for silhouette portraits.
Fernanda's take: This is the look I suggest most often for mamas who want something classic and heirloom-worthy. My studio wardrobe has a range of gowns in soft neutrals, rich jewel tones, and earthy colors, so we'll find something that feels like you.
Look 2: The Draped Robe or Wrap
What it is: A robe, knit wrap, or softly draped fabric — often worn over fitted basics or styled as the main piece with a little more openness to highlight the belly.
The vibe: Soft, intimate, and relaxed. This look feels a little more personal, like a quiet moment captured on purpose. It has a gentle, emotional feel that many mamas end up loving the most.
When it works best: In-home sessions, nursery or bedroom setups, and mamas who want a more tender, skin-forward gallery. It also photographs beautifully for partner and family moments.

Look 3: The Lifestyle or Personal Look
What it is: Your own clothes — maybe a favourite dress, a cozy oversized shirt with jeans, or something that feels meaningful and familiar to you. Basically, the "this is me" look.
The vibe: Warm, natural, and personal. These images feel honest and real, like a little snapshot of your actual life right now.
When it works best: In-home sessions where your surroundings are part of the story, family sessions where everyone wants to feel coordinated, or mamas who feel best in simple, casual pieces.
Fernanda's take: I always encourage clients to bring at least one personal piece. Some of the most meaningful images I've created have been a mama in her partner's flannel shirt or a simple white dress that's been hanging in her closet for years.
You Don't Have to Pick Just One
The beautiful thing about a maternity session — especially in my Classic or Premium packages — is that we usually have time for more than one look. A full session might start with styled portraits in a flowing gown, move into a softer robe or wrap set, and finish with a family look in your own clothes.
That variety gives your gallery more depth. Your favourite framed print might be the dramatic gown image, while the one you keep on your phone could be the candid lifestyle shot. Both can come from the same session.

Absolutely. We often do one solo mama section first, then bring in the partner and kids for a second look.
