Newborn Photography in Calgary: The Complete 2026 Guide
Whether you've just found out you're pregnant and you're already planning ahead, or you're three weeks postpartum and realising you haven't booked anything yet — this guide covers everything you need to know about newborn photography in Calgary.
I'm Fernanda, and I've been photographing newborns in this city for 15 years. Consider this the guide I'd give to my own friends and family.
What Is Newborn Photography?
Newborn photography is a specialised form of portrait photography focused on babies in their first few weeks of life — typically the first three weeks, when babies still sleep deeply, curl naturally into the positions they held in the womb, and have that unmistakably newborn quality that changes so quickly.
It's different from other baby photography because of both the timing (extremely narrow window) and the technique required (posing a sleeping newborn safely, controlling the environment, working at the baby's pace, sometimes for two to three hours per session).
Why Calgary Specifically?
Calgary has a strong community of families who invest in professional photography — and a solid number of skilled newborn photographers to choose from. But the city also has specific characteristics that affect your planning:
Weather: A Calgary winter means many families prefer studio sessions. A reliable, professional studio is essential here — you don't want to be navigating icy roads with a two-week-old for an outdoor shoot.
Hospital location: Babies born at Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, South Health Campus, or Peter Lougheed Centre typically come home to the city or the surrounding communities. My studio on 231 Yorkville Road SW is conveniently located in the SW, accessible from all major Calgary routes.
The 3–21 day window: Book your session before you give birth. Calgary's best newborn photographers fill their calendars quickly, and a tentative booking during pregnancy — adjusted once baby arrives — is the industry standard.
The Best Age for Newborn Photos in Calgary
The sweet spot is 3–14 days old. In this window:
- Babies sleep deeply and naturally
- They still curl into the fetal position without resistance
- The umbilical cord stump is usually still present (a detail many families cherish)
- Their features are still unmistakably "newborn"
Sessions up to 21 days are still very possible. After that, babies become more wakeful and alert, which changes the style of session but can still produce beautiful images.
What Happens at a Newborn Session
A typical session runs 2–3 hours. We work entirely at the baby's pace — there are breaks for feeding, settling, diaper changes, and comfort. The session typically covers wrapped and posed baby-only setups, close-up detail shots (fingers, toes, eyelashes, lips), family and parent portraits, sibling shots if applicable, and multiple colour settings and prop combinations.

What to Look for in a Calgary Newborn Photographer
Safety training and certification. Ask your photographer directly about their safety certification and training history. A portfolio that shows the work you want. Consistency matters. Experience specifically with newborns. Newborn work requires a particular set of skills and patience. A professional studio environment with proper heating and sanitized equipment. Clear communication — a good photographer walks you through everything before the session.

FAQ
What if my baby is born early or late?
Tentative bookings are completely flexible. If baby arrives early, we'll move the date forward. If late, we adjust accordingly.
