Premature or NICU Baby? Sensitive Newborn Photography Options in Calgary
If your baby arrived earlier than expected, or if you've spent time in the NICU with them, you may be wondering whether newborn photography is something that's still available to you.
It is. And in many ways, these images matter even more.
This post is for the families whose early parenthood looked different from the plan. It's written with the care that story deserves.
The NICU Experience and Photography
The NICU is a place of extraordinary medicine and extraordinary emotion. Tiny babies attached to monitors, parents learning to hold, feed, and care for their child under circumstances no one imagined. The days pass in a mix of fear, hope, exhaustion, and a love so fierce it's almost physical.
Professional NICU photography exists specifically for this space. Many hospitals — including Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, South Health Campus, and Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary — have access to NICU photography support, sometimes through volunteer organisations like Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. If this is something you want while your baby is still in hospital, I would encourage you to ask your NICU care team what's available at your specific unit. Some allow photography more freely than others.
When Baby Comes Home: Adjusted Timing
The standard "3–14 day" newborn window is based on a full-term baby. For a premature baby, the timeline shifts to corrected age — the age your baby would be if they'd been born at their due date, rather than their actual birth date.
What this means practically: if your baby was born 6 weeks early, the optimal window for styled newborn photography is approximately 6 weeks after their original due date — when, on a corrected-age basis, they're in that 3–14 day range.
We'll discuss your specific situation and your baby's condition when you reach out. Every premature birth and every baby is different, and I'll work with your timeline, your paediatrician's guidance, and your comfort level.
Special Considerations for Premature Newborns
Fragility and handling. Premature babies are handled with additional gentleness. Positions that work for full-term newborns may not be appropriate; I adjust every element of the session based on your baby's specific needs.
Medical context. If your baby is still on any monitors, has specific positioning requirements, or has feeding considerations, I need to know in advance. We plan the session around your baby's medical reality, not the other way around.
Emotional weight. NICU experiences are often traumatic for parents. A newborn session for a premature baby may bring up a complex mix of gratitude, grief, fear, and relief all at once. I hold space for all of it. If you need to stop, we stop. If you need a moment, we take it. This is your session and your experience.
What Your Gallery Can Look Like
Premature babies are beautiful. Their tiny size, their remarkable strength, the specific quality of a face that arrived before the world was quite ready — these are photographic subjects of extraordinary power.
A gallery from a premature newborn session might include more parent-and-baby contact shots (the warmth and scale of a parent's hands against their baby is particularly striking for small newborns), fewer standalone posed setups, and more lifestyle and documentary-style frames.
The result is an honest, tender record of the beginning of your family's particular story.

FAQ
Is it too late to document if my premature baby is already months old?
Never too late. Baby milestone photography, family sessions, and first birthday documentation are all available. The newborn window has its own beauty, but every stage has something worth capturing.
What if I'm not emotionally ready during the early weeks?
Take your time. The photography will be there when you're ready. Your wellbeing and your family's adjustment come first.
Can I have NICU photos taken at the hospital?
Check with your NICU care team — policies vary by unit. Organizations like Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep provide volunteer NICU photography in some Calgary hospitals; ask your care team if they have connections to these services.
My baby was premature but is now full-term corrected age and healthy — do you treat this as a normal newborn session?
Generally yes, with whatever individual adjustments your baby's specific history requires. I'll ask a few questions when you book to make sure we plan the session appropriately.
For premature and NICU families: reach out whenever you're ready. There's no rush and no wrong time.
