The Best Age for Newborn Photos — and What to Do If You've Already Missed the Window
The most common message I receive from new parents is a variation on one of two things: "I'm 8 months pregnant, should I book now?" and "My baby is 5 weeks old, have we already missed it?"
Here's the honest answer to both.
The Ideal Window: 3–14 Days
The classic newborn photography window is the first two weeks of life — specifically, days 3 through 14.
In this window:
- Babies sleep deeply and for long stretches
- They naturally hold the curled, fetal position that allows for the signature posed newborn looks
- Their features are unmistakably newborn — the specific proportions, the soft skin, the instinctive reflexes
- The umbilical cord stump is often still present if you want it documented
Days 1 and 2 are occasionally possible, but newborns in the very first days are often still adjusting and can be more wakeful and unsettled. Day 3 onward tends to produce more cooperative sessions.
The Extended Window: Up to 21 Days
Sessions up to 21 days are still very much within the newborn photography range. The approach may need slight adjustments — babies in the third week can be lighter sleepers and slightly less curled in their natural rest position — but the full range of newborn setups is still achievable.
If your baby is 15–21 days: message me. There is likely still time and still availability for a beautiful session within the traditional newborn style.
What Happens After 21 Days
After 3 weeks, newborn photography transitions into what's sometimes called "early baby" or "fresh" photography — a style that acknowledges a slightly older, more alert baby.
3–6 weeks: Baby is awake more, may not curl naturally for long periods, but candid and lifestyle newborn images (baby in parents' arms, family portraits, detail shots) are still very beautiful and meaningful.
6–12 weeks: The deep-sleep poses are harder to achieve, but there are awake portraits, tummy time shots, and family images that capture this stage beautifully. The "sleepy newborn" aesthetic is gone, but "wide-eyed baby learning the world" has its own extraordinary quality.
3–8 months: The sitter session — baby sitting upright, laughing, exploring — is a completely different and equally wonderful milestone. This has its own booking as a milestone photography session.
The Most Important Thing to Know
There is no "bad" time to document your baby. The newborn window is a specific and extraordinary window, but it's not the only one. If you missed it — through circumstances beyond your control, exhaustion, or simply not knowing — I promise you there are beautiful images waiting to be made at every stage ahead.
The regret many parents feel about the newborn window is real. But it's not a closed door to meaningful family photography. It's an invitation to start wherever you are.
FAQ
My baby is 4 weeks old. Is there anything we can still do?
Yes — reach out immediately and let's talk about what's possible. At 4 weeks, some newborn-style work is still achievable depending on your baby's individual development. The sooner you message me, the better.
What if I had a traumatic birth or postpartum complications that prevented booking earlier?
You come first, always. Heal first. When you're ready, I'll do everything possible to create beautiful images regardless of timing.
Can I book a sitter session now as "replacement" for a newborn session I missed?
A sitter session at 6–8 months is a wonderful milestone in its own right — not a replacement, because nothing replaces those first weeks, but a beautiful new chapter to document.
Wherever you are in your baby's journey, let's talk. I'll tell you honestly what's possible.
