The Best Outdoor Maternity Photo Locations in Calgary (My Personal Favourites)
After 15 years shooting maternity sessions across this city, I have strong opinions about locations — where the light lands at what hour, which trails don't destroy your gown, where to go for drama versus where to go for peace. This is my honest guide to the Calgary outdoor spots I love most for expecting mamas.
No two of these places produce the same image. The right one depends on your vision, your style, and which week you're shooting.
1. Fish Creek Provincial Park (including Bow Valley Ranch)
Best for: classic, timeless, versatile year-round sessions
My personal go-to since day one.
Fish Creek is the one I return to most — and for good reason. It has everything: tall cottonwood trees with dappled light, open meadows, river access, a heritage ranch setting (Bow Valley Ranch area is particularly stunning), and enough variety within the park that no two sessions look the same.
The light in the late afternoon, especially from August through October, is extraordinary. The canopy turns golden-orange in fall; the paths through the woods stay green and lush in summer.
Practical notes: parking is straightforward, pathways are well-maintained (important when you're 30 weeks pregnant), and we can access several different visual environments within a 10-minute walk of each other.
Ideal seasons: all four, but September–October is the absolute peak.
2. Prince's Island Park
Best for: mamas who want an urban-meets-nature feel
The downtown gem.
Prince's Island sits in the Bow River, just steps from downtown — which means you can get sweeping city skyline glimpses through the trees, combined with lush riverside greenery. It has a slightly more editorial quality than Fish Creek, which works beautifully for mamas who love a less rustic, more architectural backdrop.
Practical notes: best at golden hour when the city light is warm. Can be busier on weekends. Beautiful bridges and waterway views add a distinct character.
Ideal seasons: spring (fresh green) and fall (gorgeous colour with skyline contrast).
3. Confederation Park (Capitol Hill, NW)
Best for: variety within one location — wooden bridges, water, open lawns
Calgary's hidden gem for photographers.
Confederation Park has a quiet, storybook quality — small wooden bridges over a gentle creek, a pond that catches reflections beautifully, massive red maples that are extraordinary in fall, and open grassy areas with good afternoon light.
It's less popular than Fish Creek, which means we typically have more privacy. For mamas who want something a little quieter and more intimate, this is a top recommendation.
Practical notes: accessible parking, flat and walkable pathways, minimal elevation change.
Ideal seasons: fall for the red maples is absolutely stunning. Spring for the fresh green and water reflections.
4. Nose Hill Park
Best for: dramatic open-sky shots, prairie sunsets, wide and cinematic compositions
Calgary's big skies at their best.
Nose Hill is Calgary's largest urban park and one of the most underused for maternity photography. The southern access (off 14th St NW) opens up into an extraordinary open prairie landscape with the full Calgary skyline in the distance. Golden hour here, especially in late summer and fall, produces images unlike anything you'll get in a wooded park.
It reads more cinematic — sweeping and dramatic — rather than intimate and lush. If you want images that feel big and bold, Nose Hill delivers.
Practical notes: requires some walking, uneven terrain in places, wind exposure. Better for mamas who are comfortable walking moderate distance. High heels not recommended.
Ideal seasons: summer and fall for the golden grasses and dramatic light.
5. Edworthy Park (Bow Valley, SW)
Best for: river access, large trees, a natural, unhurried quality
Quietly beautiful.
Edworthy Park runs along the Bow River with massive Douglas firs and cottonwoods. It has a more protected, wooded quality than Nose Hill or Fish Creek — the light filters through a denser canopy, creating beautiful, moody dappled patterns.
The Douglas Fir Trail offers elevated views and interesting terrain. The riverside is peaceful and reflective.
Practical notes: great for SW Calgary families who want to stay local, closer to my studio. Terrain is slightly uneven in parts.
Ideal seasons: summer and fall. Beautiful in a light dusting of snow, too.
6. Baker Park (NW)
Best for: easy access, manicured grounds, spring flowers, river views
The comfortable, relaxed option.
Baker Park is beautifully kept — manicured lawns, mature trees, and the Bow River as a backdrop. It's one of the more accessible parks for pregnant mamas, with flat pathways and convenient parking. Spring brings colour to the flower beds; summer evenings by the river are consistently beautiful.
Practical notes: pram and stroller-friendly if you're bringing older kids. Convenient for NW Calgary families.
Ideal seasons: spring and summer.
7. Murdoch Park / Bridgeland (Cherry Blossoms)
Best for: cherry blossom season only — a narrow but extraordinary window
A fleeting, magical option.
The cherry blossoms in Bridgeland (centered around Murdoch Park) bloom for roughly two weeks in late April — some years barely ten days. If your 28–32 week window lands in that period, it produces some of the most ethereal, dream-like images of any location in the city.
Practical notes: this requires planning around a very specific seasonal window. Book early in the year if this is on your list. I track the bloom timing and will communicate once the blossoms are out.
Ideal: Late April only.
How I Choose the Right Location for You
When we plan your session, we'll talk through your vision — whether you want lush and wooded, wide and cinematic, or intimate and urban — and I'll suggest the location that fits both the aesthetic and the timing of your session. I also consider practical factors: how far along you'll be, whether you're bringing older kids or pets, and what season we're working with.
The location recommendation is always part of our pre-session consultation. You don't have to figure this out alone.
FAQ
Can I choose a location that isn't on this list?
Absolutely. If you have a place that's meaningful to you — somewhere you walk regularly, a neighbourhood you love — I'm always open to scouting it. Tell me the spot and we'll assess it together.
Do outdoor sessions cost more than studio sessions?
The packages are priced the same. In-home or travel sessions have an additional fee of $108 + $0.60/km for distances over 40km from my studio.
What happens if it rains on my session day?
I monitor the forecast closely. Light overcast is actually ideal for outdoor photography — beautiful soft, even light. For rain or heavy wind, we'll reschedule or move to the studio depending on your preference.
When's the best time of day for outdoor sessions?
Golden hour — approximately 1.5 hours before sunset — is consistently the most beautiful light for outdoor maternity photography. We'll schedule your session around that window.
