When to Book Your Newborn Session (and Why You Really Should Do It Before Birth)
The most common version of this conversation I have goes like this: a new parent messages me, baby is already 10 days old, and they're hoping I have availability in the next few days. Sometimes I do. Often I don't.
Newborn photography has a window of approximately three weeks. Professional calendars fill months in advance. These two facts, together, mean that booking before your baby arrives is not optional if you want a specific photographer at a specific time.
Here's exactly what I recommend and why.
The Ideal Booking Time
Book between 20 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
This is the sweet spot — far enough along that the pregnancy feels real and certain, early enough that calendar options are still wide open. Booking at 20 weeks for a late-year baby means you have first pick of available dates around your due window.
How Tentative Bookings Work
I (and most professional newborn photographers) use a tentative booking system for prenatal clients. Here's the process:
- You contact me with your due date. We discuss your vision, your preferred package, and we look at my calendar together.
- We select a date window — typically a 2-week window around your due date that covers the 3–14 day sweet spot.
- You pay a booking fee (deducted from your total) to hold the spot.
- When your baby arrives, you message me and we confirm the exact date within your window.
- If baby arrives early or late, we adjust. The booking fee is protected and the date moves to fit.
This system means your spot is genuinely reserved, and all the flexibility stays on your side.
What Happens When Families Wait
I want to be honest about this without being alarmist: waiting until after birth to book often means limited options.
The 3–21 day window passes faster than most people expect. By the time you're home, recovered enough to make decisions, and ready to book, the first week is often already gone. If the photographer you want is fully booked, you're choosing between waiting until the window is almost over (limiting what's possible) or choosing a photographer you wouldn't have otherwise selected.
There's also the practical reality of the newborn period: decision-making is not your strongest suit when you're operating on two hours of sleep. Having the booking already handled before birth is one less thing.
The Maternity + Newborn Bundle Option
If you're planning both a maternity session and a newborn session, the most seamless approach is to book both simultaneously during your pregnancy. This guarantees continuity with the same photographer, priority scheduling for the newborn session, and typically some combined savings.

FAQ
What if my due date changes?
Tentative bookings are flexible. If your due date shifts, we adjust the window accordingly.
Can I book if I'm already in my third trimester?
Yes — if my calendar has availability. Reach out as soon as you're ready; the sooner the better.
What if I have a C-section and recovery takes longer?
C-section recovery is completely normal and planned for. The 3–21 day window still applies, and if you need a few extra days before you feel ready to bring baby to the studio, we adjust within the window.
