Over 15 years, I've heard just about every reason a mom talks herself out of maternity photos. Most of them are based on myths — little stories we tell ourselves that simply aren't true. So let's clear the air. Here are 10 of the most common maternity photo myths, busted, so you can decide with the full picture.
Myth #1: "It's too late to book"
Truth: it's rarely too late. The ideal window is 28–34 weeks, but I've created beautiful sessions later than that. If you're pregnant and reading this, reach out — we'll make it work.
Myth #2: "I need to be skinny / glowing / perfect"
Truth: you need to be exactly as you are. Flattering posing, lighting, and a little optional Sephora makeup do the rest. Your bump is the star, not some impossible standard.
Myth #3: "It's just vanity"
Truth: it's memory-keeping. These photos aren't about showing off — they're for you and your child to look back on this once-in-a-lifetime chapter.
Myth #4: "I don't know how to pose"
Truth: you don't have to. Guiding you through every pose is literally my job. You just show up and follow along.
Myth #5: "I have nothing to wear"
Truth: you don't need to. My studio wardrobe is included — gowns, robes, and lifestyle pieces in a range of sizes.
Myth #6: "It's too expensive"
Truth: there are options for different budgets, and wardrobe is included so there's no extra shopping. I lay it all out honestly in my post on maternity photo costs.
Myth #7: "My partner will hate it"
Truth: partners are usually nervous beforehand and glowing afterward. They often end up loving the photos most — and they make the gallery so much warmer.
Myth #8: "Studio photos look stiff"
Truth: not with the right guidance. My style is clean, simple, and natural — relaxed images that feel like you, not stiff poses.
Myth #9: "I'll just use my phone"
Truth: phone snaps are lovely for everyday, but a session gives you guided posing, real lighting, and print-worthy edits — plus you actually get to be in the photos. (More on that in my DIY vs professional post.)
Myth #10: "I'll regret spending the money"
Truth: in 15 years, I've never had a mom regret it. The regret I hear is from those who didn't document their pregnancy and wish they had.
