First Pregnancy? Everything to Know About Maternity Photos

First baby? First of all — congratulations, and take a breath. There's a lot of new information flying at you right now, so let me make at least one thing simple: your maternity photos. Consider this your friendly starter guide, from someone who's been the nervous first-time mom and photographed hundreds of them.

First baby? First, congrats — and breathe

A first pregnancy is equal parts magic and overwhelm. You don't need to figure everything out at once. When it comes to documenting your bump, a little early planning makes the whole thing easy — and that's what this guide is for.

Do first-time moms really "need" maternity photos?

"Need" is a strong word, but here's what I'll say: your first pregnancy only happens once, and it's the one most moms tell me they're so glad they captured. There's something especially tender about photographing the very first time you become a parent.

When to book (and the sweet spot week)

Aim for a session between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round, and you're usually still comfortable enough to enjoy it. Booking a few weeks ahead means you'll land that ideal window without a last-minute scramble.

What to wear when nothing fits like before

This is the #1 worry I hear from first-timers — and the easiest to solve. My studio wardrobe is included, with gowns, robes, and lifestyle pieces in a range of sizes, so you don't have to buy a single thing. Bring anything personal you'd like to include, and leave the rest to me.

What actually happens at the session

In short: we plan it together, you arrive and relax, I guide every pose, and about a week later you'll see your gallery. No experience needed, no awkward guessing — I lead the whole way.

Choosing a photographer you trust

Look for a style you love, real experience with posing, and clarity on what's included. Reviews that talk about how the session felt tell you the most. The right fit makes all the difference for a first-timer.

A simple timeline for your first maternity session

  • Around 20–24 weeks: start looking and book your date
  • 28–34 weeks: your session
  • ~1 week later: gallery reveal
  • Before baby arrives: order prints and wall art while you have time

You can see the studio and wardrobe on my maternity page, and if you're also thinking ahead to baby, take a peek at my newborn photography page.

FAQ

Is it too early to plan in my first trimester?

Not at all — booking early just secures your date. The shoot itself happens later.

What if my baby comes early?

It happens — that's why I suggest the 28–34 week window. If life surprises us, we'll adapt.

Should I bundle maternity and newborn?

If you want the whole story (and some savings), yes. Wondering if it's worth it overall? Read whether maternity photos are worth it.
