Family Photography in Calgary: How to Get Photos You'll Actually Love

Most families have, at some point, a family photo they'd prefer to forget. Everyone looks slightly uncomfortable, somebody's squinting, and the whole thing feels staged in a way that doesn't remotely resemble how your family actually is.

It doesn't have to be like that.

After 15 years of photographing Calgary families, here's what I know about how to get family photos you'll genuinely love.

Start With the Right Photographer

This sounds obvious, but it matters more than any other variable. Look at a photographer's portfolio and ask: does this look like real people, or does it look posed and stiff? The best family photography has an ease to it — a quality of people being themselves in front of a camera, not performing for it.

Read reviews specifically for what clients say about how the session felt. A session that felt good usually produces images that look good.

Choose Your Location Intentionally

Studio sessions offer controlled light, a warm environment regardless of season, and a range of backdrop options. Ideal for families with very young children who need climate control, for winter sessions, and for families who want a clean, classic aesthetic.

Outdoor sessions offer natural light, natural backdrops, and a freedom of movement that produces more candid, dynamic images. Calgary has excellent outdoor options: Fish Creek Provincial Park and Confederation Park for wooded warmth, Nose Hill for dramatic open skies, Prince's Island for an urban-nature combination.

In-home sessions are the most personal — your space, your morning light, your family's actual life as the visual context.

Time It Well

Golden hour — approximately 60–90 minutes before sunset — produces the most beautiful natural light for outdoor family photography. In Calgary's summer, that's 8–9pm. In spring and fall, 6–7pm.

The best season for outdoor family photography in Calgary is fall (September–October). The light is lower and warmer than summer, the colours are extraordinary, and the temperatures are comfortable. Book in July or August for fall sessions.

For young children: schedule around naps and meals. A well-rested, recently-fed child is a happier, more cooperative child.

Let the Connection Be the Photograph

The best family photos aren't the ones where everyone is looking at the camera with matching smiles. They're the ones where someone is laughing at something real, where a parent is looking at their child, where the relationship between people is visible.

My approach is to guide families into genuine connection — movement, interaction, conversation — and photograph what naturally emerges. You'll be surprised how different (and how much better) those images are compared to the traditional "look at the camera and say cheese" approach.

FAQ

How far in advance should I book?
For fall sessions, book by late July or August — the most popular season books fast. For other seasons, 4–6 weeks ahead is usually sufficient.

What if our kids don't cooperate?
Every session involves some version of this. I'm experienced with every age and every temperament. We work around the difficult moments, and often those moments produce the most authentic images.
