One of the first questions moms ask me is, "Should we do studio or outdoor?" It's a great question — and the honest answer is that both are beautiful in different ways. Living and shooting in Calgary for 15 years, I've learned exactly when each one shines (and how our famously moody weather fits in). Here's how to choose.
The quick comparison
- Studio: total control of light and temperature, year-round, with my full wardrobe on hand. Clean, timeless, and never weather-dependent.
- Outdoor: natural light, greenery, and the beauty of Calgary's parks — gorgeous, but tied to season and weather.
- Both: many moms bundle a studio session with an outdoor one for the best of each.
Why studio sessions are so reliable (hello, Calgary weather)
The biggest advantage of the studio is certainty. Rain, wind, smoke, or a surprise June snow won't touch us. We control the light, you stay comfortable, and the full wardrobe is right there. For a guaranteed, stress-free session, studio wins — especially in our unpredictable shoulder seasons.
The magic of an outdoor maternity session
There's nothing like golden evening light through the trees. Outdoor sessions bring movement, nature, and a soft, romantic feeling that's hard to replicate indoors. When the weather cooperates and the season is right, they're pure magic.
Best seasons & locations for outdoor maternity photos in Calgary
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot. Some of my favourite spots are Fish Creek Provincial Park, Prince's Island Park, Confederation Park, and Baker Park along the Bow River — each with its own personality and best season.
Why not both? The studio + outdoor bundle
If you can't decide, you don't have to. Pairing a studio session with an outdoor one gives you the clean, timeless studio portraits and the natural, romantic outdoor frames — double the variety in your gallery.
How to decide based on your vibe, timing & comfort
Choose studio if you're due in the colder months, want guaranteed results, or value comfort and wardrobe variety. Choose outdoor if you love nature and you're due in warm weather with flexible timing. Choose both if you want it all. You can see the studio setup and wardrobe on my maternity page, and compare options on my availability page.

Roughly late May through September, depending on your due date.
