How to Prepare Your Baby for a Cake Smash Photoshoot
A well-prepared session is a happy session. Here's exactly what I tell families before their cake smash.
Time It Around Naps
Sessions are available at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Choose the slot that follows your baby's best nap of the day.
A well-rested one-year-old is curious, engaged, and in the emotional state where a cake in front of them is interesting rather than threatening. An overtired one-year-old finds everything overwhelming. The nap timing is genuinely the most important logistical variable.
Get the Hunger Level Right
Neither too full nor too hungry. A baby who is slightly hungry will be more curious about the cake — which produces better engagement with the smash element. A baby who is stuffed from a big meal right before won't be interested.
A light snack 1–1.5 hours before the session usually hits the right window.
Bring the Cake (and a Backup Outfit)
You provide the cake — one that's safe for your baby, appropriate size for smashing (a 6-inch round is typical), and that your baby will be happy to eat. Let the bakery know it's for a photo smash cake if you want it smash-ready (slightly firmer structure).
Bring a complete backup outfit and extra clothing. The smash section will require a change. Also bring: wipes, a nappy bag stocked for the session length, and a comfort item or favourite toy for between-setup comfort.
Don't Pre-Introduce the Cake
Resist the urge to let your baby "practice" with the cake before the session. First contact with the cake should be during the session — the genuine curiosity and discovery photographs beautifully.
What to Tell Siblings
If an older sibling is joining: brief, positive framing. "Baby is going to smash a cake and it's going to be amazing, and you'll get to be in the photos too." Manage expectations about the mess level.
For Parents Joining the Session
Simple, solid, neutral-toned clothing. All eyes should be on the birthday baby. Skip large logos and busy patterns.
FAQ
What if baby refuses to touch the cake?
We have fresh fruit and other approaches as alternatives. Some babies take several minutes to warm up; I'm patient and experienced. The images are beautiful regardless.
Should we do the cake smash first so baby has energy?
Actually no — I do clean portraits first, while baby is fresh. The smash comes after, when energy and enthusiasm can run freely. The sequence is intentional.
