Where to Order First Birthday Smash Cakes in Calgary: My Curated List
You bring the cake; I provide everything else. But "just bring a cake" is easier said than done when you're trying to find one that's baby-safe, smash-ready, and beautiful enough to photograph well.
So here's the honest version, before the list: the cake can be simple and cheap, and it will still photograph beautifully. From there, the customization — and the investment — grows exactly as much as you want it to. Seven dollars or two hundred, your baby's face is still the best thing in the frame.
A note: I'm not affiliated with any of these businesses. This is a genuine recommendation list based on client experience and quality research. Prices are approximate for 2026 — always confirm current pricing, availability and allergy information directly with each bakery.
Step 1 — The Simplest, Cheapest Option: Grab One Off the Shelf
Walk into the bakery department at Safeway or Sobeys (same company, same product) and ask for a "Celebration Cake Smash." They'll know exactly what you mean — it's a stocked bakery item, not a special request.
Price: about $6.99. That's it. A 260 g single-serve round cake, already iced, already the right size for a baby.
How far ahead: none needed — it's on the shelf. That said, one store might be sold out on a busy weekend, so call the bakery counter a day or two before and ask them to set one aside. Buy it the day before your session, not the morning of.
And this is the part people don't expect: a plain, simple cake often photographs better. Fewer colours, less clutter, nothing competing with your baby's expression.

Step 2 — Want It Customized? Same Counter, One Step Up
If you want the cake to match your theme or outfit colours, order a custom celebration cake at the same bakery counter — Safeway, Sobeys or Save-On-Foods. You choose:
- Icing / frosting colour — one or two shades is plenty. Ask for real buttercream, not whipped topping: it holds its shape under studio lights and smashes beautifully.
- The decoration on top — sprinkles, piped rosettes, a simple "ONE", a smooth finish, or ask them to leave the top plain so your own cake topper can sit on it.
- Size, flavour and filling — ask for a small round, 4–6 inches.
Price: plain round cakes start at $23.99, climbing with size and personalization — so realistically $24–$40 for a small custom-decorated one.
How far ahead: Safeway and Sobeys can have a custom cake ready in as little as 24 hours, but don't count on it. Order 3–5 days ahead, and a full week if your session falls on a long weekend or in December.

Step 3 — When the Cake Is the Centrepiece of the Party
Sculpted fondant, themed characters, fresh flowers, hand-lettering, layered textures. Genuinely gorgeous work — and if the cake is the star of a bigger party, it can be worth every dollar. Just know you're paying five to twenty times the shelf price and ordering weeks ahead.

Practical Tips for Ordering a Smash Cake
Let the bakery know it's for a photo smash session. This tells them the cake should be visually beautiful from every angle (not just the front), and that structural integrity for the smash matters.
Ask for buttercream, not whipped cream or fondant. Buttercream holds up under lights, photographs with lovely texture, and is the most fun for a baby to actually dig into.
Consider a "baby-safe" layer. Many parents order a standard cake for the adults and a small separate smash cake made with minimal or no sugar, dairy-free, or allergy-adapted for the baby to actually eat. Discuss with the bakery.
Size: A 4–6 inch round is ideal for smashing — small enough for baby to explore, large enough to create good visual impact.
Pick up the cake the day before, not the morning of. One less thing to rush on session day. Keep it cool, and let it come to room temperature for about an hour before the smash so the icing is soft.
