What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot: The Definitive Guide

If there's one thing that makes moms-to-be nervous before a session, it's this: "What on earth am I going to wear?" Take a breath — because after styling 700+ maternity sessions in Calgary, I promise this is the easiest part. Here's your definitive guide to what to wear for maternity photos, and why the "I have nothing that fits" panic ends here.

The golden rule of maternity outfits

Wear something that hugs your bump, not hides it. The whole point is to celebrate that beautiful round belly, so fitted or flowing pieces that show its shape always win over loose, tent-like clothing. Comfort matters too — if you feel good, it shows in every frame.

Most flattering silhouettes for your bump

A few styles photograph beautifully on nearly everyone: long fitted gowns that skim the bump, flowing dresses with movement, a simple bodysuit with a maxi skirt, or a relaxed knit with leggings for a lifestyle feel. The fabric matters — anything with drape and movement looks gorgeous in photos.

Colours that photograph beautifully

Soft neutrals, creamy tones, earthy shades, and rich jewel tones all read beautifully on camera. Busy patterns and bright neons can distract from your face and bump. (I go deeper in my post on the best colours for maternity photos.)

Studio gowns vs lifestyle looks vs your own clothes

You can lean dreamy (a flowing gown), relaxed (a cozy lifestyle outfit), or personal (something meaningful from your own closet) — or mix all three in one session. Not sure which is "you"? My post on choosing your photoshoot look breaks it down.

What your partner and kids should wear

Coordinate, don't match. Keep everyone in the same colour family with simple, solid pieces so all eyes stay on you. More on that in my family styling guide.

Why my wardrobe is included (no shopping required)

Here's the best part: you don't have to buy a thing. My studio wardrobe — gowns, robes, and lifestyle pieces in a range of sizes — is included in your session. We choose your looks together at the consultation. (Full details in my post on why the wardrobe is included.)

Outdoor vs studio: small outfit tweaks

Outdoors, lean into flowing fabrics that move in the breeze and layers for Calgary's changeable weather. In studio, anything goes since we control the light and temperature.

FAQ

Do I need to buy a special dress? No — my studio wardrobe is included, so there's no shopping required.

What's the most flattering thing to wear? A fitted or flowing piece that shows the bump's shape, in a soft solid colour.

Can I bring my own clothes? Absolutely — personal or cultural pieces are always welcome alongside the studio wardrobe.
