Is It Worth It?

Is a cake smash session really worth it?

Yes — and not because of the cake. What you are actually photographing is the last few weeks of your baby before they become a toddler: the expressions, the hands, the way they look at you before deciding it is safe to dive in. The cake is just the excuse that makes all of it happen in front of a camera.

My baby is messy enough at home — why pay for more mess?

Because this time you get to watch instead of clean. The setup, the props, the bathtub and the cleanup are all mine. You sit with a cup of tea and enjoy it.

What if my baby cries the whole time?

Some babies dive straight in, some stare at the cake for twenty minutes, and some cry. All of it is normal, and none of it ruins the session. Nothing is rushed or forced — if your little one needs a break, a cuddle or a snack, we pause and follow their rhythm. Some of my favourite frames come from the moment right after a good cry.

What if my baby will not touch the cake at all?

It happens more often than you would think, and we have a plan. We start with fruit, which most babies accept faster, and I let them come to the cake in their own time. If it stays untouched, we still have the family portraits, the themed setup and the bathtub — three quarters of the session does not depend on the cake.

Is it worth it for a second or third baby?

Every parent I ask says the same thing: the first baby has a thousand photos and the second has a hundred. This is one afternoon that evens the score.

We already had a birthday party. Can we still do this?

Absolutely, and many families do both. The party is for everyone else; this one is for your baby, with proper light and nobody asking you to hold the cake at a better angle.

Timing & Booking

What is the best age for a cake smash session?

Anywhere between 10 months and a year and a half works beautifully. Most families book the session for about a month before the first birthday, so the photos are ready in time for the party — but there is nothing wrong with doing it after.

How far in advance should I book?

Aiming for about 30 days before the first birthday is the sweet spot. That said, every family has its own timing — get in touch and we will find a date that works for yours. I am always flexible.

My baby is younger than 10 months, or already past 18. Can we still do it?

Talk to me. Ten to eighteen months is where these sessions work best, but I would rather look at your baby’s stage than at the calendar.

What days and times are available?

Any day of the week, Monday to Sunday, at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m., in my SW Calgary studio. Both slots work well — mornings suit babies who nap early, afternoons suit those who wake late.

Where is the studio, and is there parking?

231 Yorkville Road SW, Calgary. Parking is right in front of the studio, so you can unload the cake, the bag and the baby without a walk.

How do I book, and what happens next?

You pick your date and time online. A $50 booking fee secures the slot and comes off the final amount. Within 24 hours I send the agreement, a short form and the payment instructions — and then a series of emails that walk you through the cake, the outfits and the day itself.

The Cake

Is the cake included?

No — and that is on purpose. Every family has different dietary needs, allergies and feelings about sugar, and a first birthday cake is not something I want to decide for you. You choose the cake; I take care of absolutely everything else.

How big should the cake be?

Small — around 15 to 20 cm. The point of the cake is the mess, not the cake, so the simpler it is the better it works.

What kind of cake photographs best?

Soft buttercream or whipped cream. It is easy for small hands to smash and play with, and it catches light beautifully.

What frosting colours photograph best, and which should I avoid?

Soft, muted tones photograph beautifully — cream, blush, lilac, sage, sky and butter all work well in the studio light. Strong dyes such as red, black, dark blue and deep purple are best avoided: they transfer to hands, mouth and cheeks within seconds, and no amount of editing fully undoes them.

Why should I avoid fondant?

Fondant and hard decorations do not photograph well, and they make it difficult for a baby to interact with the cake — they push, it does not give, and they lose interest.

What should I tell the bakery?

Say it is for a cake smash session. That one phrase tells a bakery to keep it soft, baby-friendly and light on decoration.

My baby has allergies, or we avoid sugar. What do you recommend?

The cake is entirely your call, and that is precisely why I do not provide one. Sugar, diet and allergies are different in every family, and you are the only person who should be deciding what your baby eats on their first birthday. Whatever you bring, I will photograph it beautifully.

Can I make the cake myself?

Yes, and plenty of parents do. The same rules apply: soft frosting, no fondant, gentle colours.

Theme, Outfit & Styling

Do I need to plan a theme?

Only if you want to. Every setup is built for your baby rather than picked from a catalogue — balloon garlands in soft pastel tones, a backdrop chosen from simple and timeless through to colourful and themed, and props like wooden letters, cake stands, toys and blankets. Tell me a colour, a mood, or nothing at all, and I will design around it. Past setups have included teddy bears, a vintage race car, a boho rainbow and pastel florals — happy to build something similar or something completely new for your baby.

Do I need to bring decorations?

Nothing. The full decoration setup, the themed props and the baby bathtub are all provided.

Do I need to buy an outfit for my baby?

No. I keep a large collection of outfits for boys and girls at the studio, in a range of sizes and colours, and we choose together on the day so it works with the setup and the cake. Ask me and I will tell you what I have in your baby’s size. You are welcome to bring something of your own too — many families do one look from my collection and one that is theirs.

How many outfits should I bring?

One or two — one for the cake and one for after the bath — plus a full change of clothes for the way home.

What should the rest of us wear?

Soft, coordinated tones: beige, white, light grey or pastels. Avoid strong colours, logos and patterns. Coordinate, but do not overthink it — keep the focus on your baby and the emotions.

What do I need to bring on the day?

The cake, one or two outfits for your baby, a towel, a full change of clothes, and wipes. That is the whole list.

Can we match the setup to the cake?

Yes — send me a photo of the cake when you order it and I will pull the balloon garland and backdrop to match.

During Your Session

How does the session actually go?

Three moments, in this order: family portraits first, while everyone is clean and your baby is settled; then the cake, with fruit alongside; and finally the bathtub — warm water and bubbles, which babies love and which gives some of the calmest frames of the day.

How long does it take?

Two hours in the studio. That sounds long for a one-year-old, and it is deliberate: it leaves room for feeds, cuddles, an outfit change, and a baby who needs ten minutes to decide about the cake.

Should my baby nap and eat before?

Yes — let your baby nap and eat before coming, so they arrive rested and happy. And avoid introducing new foods right before the session, to prevent any tummy discomfort.

Can siblings and family be in the photos?

Yes — siblings and family are included, at no extra charge. We photograph everyone at the start, before the frosting.

What if my baby is having a bad day?

Your baby’s comfort, safety and happiness always come first. Nothing is rushed or forced. Babies feel your mood, so the single most useful thing you can do is arrive a few minutes early and let yourself relax.

How messy does it really get, and who cleans up?

Very messy, and that is the point. The bathtub handles the baby and I handle the studio. You leave with a clean, dressed child and none of the cleanup.

How much does a cake smash session cost in Calgary?

A cake smash session is $468 plus tax. A $50 booking fee secures your date and is deducted from the final amount.

What is included?

Two hours in the studio · the three moments · the full themed setup, decoration and props · outfits from the studio collection · the baby bathtub · siblings and family · and 20 retouched high-resolution digital images, delivered in colour and black & white.

Are the digital images included?

Yes. Your 20 retouched images are the delivery — high-resolution digital files, yours to print and share, in colour and black & white.

Can I buy extra images?

Yes, and many families do once they see the gallery: 1 for $18, 10 for $108, 25 for $216, 50 for $360.

When will I receive my photos?

Your proofing gallery arrives within 7 business days. Once you send your selection, editing takes up to 30 business days. Express delivery in 3 business days is available for $108.

How do I choose my favourites?

Through an online gallery. The images there are unedited and watermarked — background, imperfections and small details are all refined afterwards, on the ones you choose.

Do you offer prints and albums?

Not at the moment — I deliver high-resolution digital files, which you are free to print anywhere you like. Printed products are something I am working on.
